To resurrect and celebrate
WONG CHIN FOO
The First Asian American Civil Rights Leader

Wong Chin Foo (1843-1898) was a trailblazer who coined the term "Chinese American" for his newspaper in 1883, boldly shaping a new identity for immigrants proud to call America home.
As a fearless journalist and captivating storyteller in popular American newspapers and magazines, Wong shattered stereotypes and fearlessly stood up against racism through dynamic lectures and debates across the nation during the Gilded Age. He passionately championed equal rights for Asians, as promised by the U.S. Constitution, and remains an inspiring role model for groups striving for full representation in every facet of American life.
The Citizen Wong Project is on a mission to celebrate Wong's legacy through a variety of exciting platforms, including an Off-Broadway play, a short dramatic film, engaging reenactments, and a full-color comic booklet. With plans for a full-length documentary, feature film, TV series, and additional educational resources, we aim to inspire a shift in perspective among thought leaders and the general public toward “a more perfect union” that wholeheartedly embraces diversity.
